“Matrilineality” Immy Fraser

‘Your daughters have your eyes’
You have your mothers face’
‘You have your mothers nose’
‘You look like your sister’

Inspired by Roland Barthes and his theory on family resemblance in photography, I decided to look into my own family resemblance, focusing on the female line, in particular the mother’s line. I used the deadpan aesthetic to create cool and unemotional images. This aesthetic uses a straight-on camera angle with the sitter centralised, and is often referred to as ‘presenting evidence or specimens’. (Archive.boston.com. 2020.) I am presenting a female line to the viewer, titling each image with a phrase that has been said to each individual about their physical appearance, relating to family resemblance.
